Gary and Gray pick their favourite albums of the past 12 months
Hey, Gary here, as usual. Gearing up for the hectic wind down that is December.
The most enjoyable headache of any given year is that time when you have to start thinking about the highlights. But that doesn’t mean we don’t dive in with both feet. It’s been a good year, but maybe a slow burner, with some fantastic records saving themselves until late on in the calendar. But now, after much discussion and deliberation, Graham an d I can reveal what we have picked for our top 20 albums of 2024.
You might expect to find some of the albums that are all over the end of year lists - The Cure, The Smile, Nick Cave and the Badseeds… but there’s also some wonderful surprises — to us, and maybe to you. So please do lick on the link to see what we’ve chosen.

All the albums on the list are available to buy from Grinning Soul Records - of course! What’s the point in having a record shop if you don’t stock your favourite albums of the year.
And as for the website, it’s filling up with more stock every day. So, as we’d planned, as the run-up to Christmas hots up, the site is ready to take orders. If you’re already feeling the strain of the Christmas shopping culture, you can now just sit back with a glass of sherry (not before noon, obviously) and click to order great records that you can just swing by and pick up at your own convenience.

Also, a little update on what’s happening in the shop. We’ll be open every day in the run up to Christamas, including several instances of late night shopping. That includes today (Friday December 6th) so that we can play some tunes and enjoy Monmouth’s legendary Lantern Parade that tales place every year. We hope that if you’re in the market for some lanterns, you’ll also pop in and say hello.
So, we’re upwardly mobile now and ready to help the Christmas of you and your music-loving loved ones a thing of groovy beauty.
